Maurizio Cecconi

Senior Medical Advisor

Professor Maurizio Cecconi is an anesthesiologist, intensive care specialist, and Chair of the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care Units at Humanitas Research Hospital in Milan, Italy. He is the Vice President of the joint Medicine-Bioengineering degree “MEDTEC School” at Humanitas University in Milan, Italy. He completed his studies in Italy (University of Udine), Spain (Universidad Autonoma de Madrid), UK (doctoral degree at St George’s University of London) and USA (research program GCSRT at Harvard Medical School).

He worked for 14 years as an NHS Consultant at St George’s Hospital, London, UK where he chaired one of the largest Critical Care Departments in Europe.

He is the immediate Past President of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine which he led through the most difficult times of its history during the COVID19 Pandemic. He designed and directed the EU funded C19_SPACE to 20000 healthcare workers. He is part of the Surviving Sepsis and worked with WHO for the COVID-19 Clinical Guidelines.

 

Under his Leadership, ESICM established its reputation within European Institutions and was awarded the Gastein Health Forum European Health Leadership Award in 2021.

In 2018 he was awarded the Silver Griffin by his Alma Mater, the University of Udine. In 2020 he was mentioned by JAMA as one of the most influential doctors of the pandemic,

and was nominated Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.

Maurizio’s research focuses on Improving outcomes in Perioperative Care and Data Science and Physiology of Shock, Acute Respiratory Failure and Sepsis.

Maurizio is a very active researcher with more than 350 peer-reviewed articles and an H-Index of 74.
